If you did not alter the installation process, a Quest icon will be present on your desktop.
Character Creation
Hopefully,
you've installed Quest, and you are ready to play. After double
clicking on the Quest Icon on your desktop, you should be greeted with
the login window.
It
should be noted that Quest has a tendency to "hang" on the above
screen. If you load the game, and it seems to be <searching for
quest master server...> for a long time, close the program (you
might have to alt, ctrl, del to close it all the way) and reopen it
from your desktop. (Thanks Raetac)
Click the "Create" button to begin creating your charater.
Desired Nickname: Enter desired name (Lets keep it clean, guys).
Email: Make sure an enter an email address that you can check. You will not be able to play without one.
Gender: Pick your gender. This has NO affect on your character stats. ONLY on your sprite's appearance.
Decide on your race based on the stats and skills.
About Stats:
HP --> Hit points. When you run out of these, you are dead!
MP --> Mana points. This is your pool for casting.
STR --> Strength. Determines your attack/berserk damage.
DEF --> Defense. Reduces the damage monsters do to you. 3 of these will add 1 to your total defense.
DEX
--> Dexterity. Increases credit you get for Dodge/Parry combat
skills, thus making them develop faster. Dex also increases your
chances of first attack and successful flee.
INT --> Determines the damage of offensive magic spells.
The
small little person on the bottom right corner (above cancel) is your
sprite. It is the respresentation of you that others can see. It is
appearance is determined by your race and gender.
If
you find a bug, and it seems abusable, don't abuse it. Report it in the
Quest Bug Forum. If you don't have an account and don't want to make
one, ask someone else to do it. Bug abusing is serious, and could
propably lead to banning.
2. Spamming
If
you have a question to ask that is not answered here or in one of the
other guides, ask only once, and be polite. There's no need to ask 347
times just because your question is not answered after one minute. If
it's not answered within, say 5 minutes, you can ask again. But first
make sure it isn't already answered, you could have missed it. Also, if
you want to sell/buy a rare, don't announce it with capital letters
every 5 seconds. Do not beg. Everybody hates beggers.
3. Be Polite
Do
not DEMAND things from more experienced players. That'll probably just
make them angrier and less inclined to help you. And also, please use
proper grammar it's a lot easier to understand if you write it
properly.
4. Don't Cheat In Trades
By
"cheating in trades", I mean trying to sell/buy something that you
don't have or can't pay for, so you can run away with the money/goods.
5. Don't Cheat In Any Other Way
Hacking comes to mind. It's hardly ever happened as far as I know, and it should stay that way. If you can hack, don't.
The full Quest Constitution can be found in your Quest folder.
Open Quest from your desktop again, but this time click enter. Submit your user name and password and lets roll.
Map:
Use your arrow keys to move around
Use your mouse to toggle between the map and chat.
Your sprite is in the middle of the map.
The paths are usually safe from monster attacks.
You may duel or trade with other sprites on the map by standing over them and clicking the buttons that appear under "Meditate"
Corpses can also often be found on the map. Someone died in that location, and their coin is up for grabs.
Outside the Map:
Upper Right:
Distance from town - Helps to gauge how far you are from the starting point. Be careful, the further you move away, the harder the monsters are!
Middle Right:
Displays the armor, weapon and potion (amount) at the top. Then inventory below also displays the items you are carrying in your inventory. (0 = empty)
Decline PvP/Pk: You probably do NOT want to leave this unchecked. This option prevents other players from hurting you.
Note: You also cannot loot corpses with this unchecked. Weigh the risk yourself.
Buttons Across the bottom:
Detailed Stats: Offers more information about your character.
Meditate: Helps to rejuvenate MP (mana points). Only useable outside of battle.
Use Spell: Click this to select a spell (IE: Healing) from the "see spell menu" (explained below).
GOLD: Gold is gained through battles or mining.
LVL (Levels): Gained through experience. Experience is gained through Battles.
Mid/Lower Left:
Use "See Spells" to select an earned heal. Then click "Use Spell" (above) to cast out of battle.
Dungeon entrance: Mid-upper map door. The monsters inside are levels 4 to 7. This will be a good place to visit much later.
Blue
chest (below dungeon): This is your chest. You can keep items and money
here. If you deposit your gold here, you will not lose it when you die!
Store
Entrance: Door below the blue chest. This is the entrance to the store.
Once you earn some money, you can buy potions, weapons and armor here.
Mines:
To
get here follow the trail from town south, then turn with it all the
way to the lonely door at the top of the layered hill (surrounded by
crosses.
This
place is nice for a quick buck. The more you mine, the more gold you
can make each trip. Just remember, it is very easy to die, and lose
massive XP!
Witch:
The
Witch lives far, far, far south of town (about 2200 in distance). The
only purpose of the witch is to change your sprite when you have met
certain requirements. SO... until you meet the following requirements,
its pretty pointless to pay her a visit (and you'll probably die on the
trip).
/ignore
[name] - to ignore someone who may be harrassing you. This must be
reset every login. If it is a serious problem tell a [QO] (Quest
Operator).
/wiregold [name] # - to send someone gold.
Keep in mind, you and the person you are sending money to must be above level 3.
Fights/Experience
The numbers you see at the top can help you (EX: 1/4/2)
1 is the level of this monster (they only go up to 8).
4 is the HP of the monster.
2 is the monster's strength.
The vertical red bars are the attack speeds of you and your ruthless opponent.
The green bar is the monster's HP. (Your HP is still on the outside)
The first drop list gives me a list of actions to perform
Attack - Regular attack
Berserk Attack - Powerful attack, but it will cost some some HP.
Flee - Run away! Run away!
HP Heal - using potion
MP Heal - uses potion
The second drop down list gives a list of spell lines to choose from.
The third shows the different spells available (Depends on Spell Line and spell line level.)
Note:
It is natural to miss with attacks and fizzle spells frequently in the
beginning. This will happen less and less as your skills increase.
Let me explain melee attack damage
Your
attack damage is directly porportional to your HP. So if your max
attack is 4 dmg, you will do 4 dmg when your HP is full..
If
you are at 1/2 hp, you will only do 2 dmg. Get it? , Melees make sure
and keep your HP up. This does not apply for magic users.
The same applies for monster damage. The lower their HP, the lower their damage.
XP in a Nutshell
As
you fight and kill more and more monsters, you will gain more and more
experience. When you die to a monster, you lose experience (as
well as any gold you may have been carrying). Dying can be costly and
time consuming, so try not to do it too often ;).
Oh yeah, you also lose xp when you die in the mines. Keep that in mind.
Level UP
Stat Review:
HP --> Hit points. When you run out of these, you are dead!
MP --> Mana points. This is your pool for casting.
STR --> Strength. Determines your attack/berserk damage.
DEF --> Defense. Reduces the damage monsters do to you. 3 of these will add 1 to your total defense.
DEX
--> Dexterity. Increases credit you get for Dodge/Parry combat
skills, thus making them develop faster. Dex also increases your
chances of first attack and successful flee.
INT --> Determines the damage of offensive magic spells.
Special Note: When you are level 2, that doesn't mean you should fight level 2 monsters.
Depending on your Skill levels and items, at about level 10
you may want to venture out and test the water. Don't be discouraged if you die a lot in the beginning.
But then again, don't be a damned fool about it either. =P
Player vs. Player
If
you do not have "Decline PvP/Pk" checked on the main screen, you are
subject to duel challenges and PK attacks. I'll attempt an
explanation.
PvP:
You receive/send (send by standing over someone on the map and clicking
"duel challenge") a duel challenge. The recepient accepts.
Bloody, bloody battle ensues. You do not have to fight to the death,
however. A mutual draw is available, if your opponent is willing.
Pk:
Right click on the map until the little target-like curser appears.
Rapidly click an opponent to attack. If you are being attack a
message will appear in the chat box informing you of how much damage
you are taking.
Starting PK Tournaments
Advice from Ronin46X / Tyr
Alrighty.
Before starting a PK tournament, check two things:
1) Was there a tournament less than ten minutes before hand?
2) Do at least 4 of the people logged in want to participate?
If
at least 10 minutes has past since the last PK tournament and 4 or more
people said they would join, then go right ahead and start a
tournament.
To start a PK tournament, type /startpk in the chat.
All
you have to do is go to the cave just west of town (before the mines)
and start killing once the tournament starts. (A notice in the chat box
will tell you when it starts).
Magic is not yet effective in PVP.
You do lose gold to PvP deaths, you do not lose XP.
Carry lots of potion and good luck!
Tips & Tricks
About F2
If you learn nothing else today, learn about F2
Hit F2 when you are logged into the game.
--> Don't mess with "Game Server" if you dont know what your doing.
--> Use Auto Login if you like, but I wouldn't recommend it if you are sharing a computer with another Quester.
--> You can enable and disable the Bad-word Filter in under the "Chatroom" drop down.
--> Customize your chat colors. Just for fun
--> If you are having lag issues, disable viewplayers.
TURN ON NOSCROLL TURN OFF BATTLEDELAY (trust me)
Yah, you can turn on the sound too, if you like (that'll last 2 minutes).
Hotkeys
For
fighters, I like to set my HealHP to "Z". That way it is right under
"A" (attack). Then I can fight quickly with one hand on the left side
of the keyboard, and the other hand on the arrow keys.
To set spells, type the exact spell name.
Example: I want to set Q to Wall of Electricity.
Spell_1_key : Q
Spell_1 : Wall of Electricity
Hotkeys are very valuable tools. Change them up until you find the most comfortable/fastest way to level.
Player Advice:
TheMawGrint:
[don't] just run into the dungeon first thing. I think that's the
leading cause of death among new players (except for Markus).
If I had a nickel for every time I've found a corpse with 100 gold on it in there, I'd still not be as rich.
Still Need Help?
The
following experienced questers have volunteered to answer any questions
new players may have. More than likely, you'll find at least one in game
If
you would like your name on this list, please email me:
vj@veggie-juice.com, talk to me in game (dent / veggie_juice) or find
me at the forums (VJ).
Again, they are volunteering to help with advice. Please do not harass them for gold or items.
On
the same note, if you contact one of the volunteers for assistance, and
you feel they were rude, or purposely misguiding, let me know.
