This is a brief guide for people new to this version of Quest. If you are a new player or a returning vet who hasn't played in a while, this may help to answer a few questions that you have about weapon skills.
For starters, there is no more "skill exp", it has been replaced by skill points. Each character receives 2 skill points each time they finish a level. These skill points can be spent in a variety of ways, including weapon skills, magical skills, offensive, defensive, or general skills. As a warrior you can invest skill points in weapon skills to gain better attacks.
When you first create a character you start out with the basic action of attack. This is a basic attack that can be used regardless of what class of weapon that you are using. As you are starting out you will soon realize that you will be finding new and better weapons all the time, so it may be hard to commit to one class. However, there are advantages to focusing on spending your skill points in one particular class. The more points you invest into a weapon skill the more powerful your attacks will become when using that class of weapon.
For every point you invest into a weapon skill you gain a more efficient attack. As you keep investing skill points you will learn more powerful attacks. These attacks will continue to deal more damage all the way up to 500 skill points invested. All weapon skills reach their cap at 500 skill points invested, after that adding additional points into a weapon skill would give you no benefits.
One thing you want to remember when adding to weapon skills is to hotkey your new weapon skill if you change it. To hotkey this to your quick bar you click on edit quick bar, then your weapon skill, select your attack skill and drag the icon onto your quick bar under any slot you feel like. If you wish to change the hotkey associated with any icon you can by going into edit quick bar then clicking the letter under the icon and simply typing the new letter that you want.
As mentioned earlier, it may be difficult to decide which weapon skill to invest points in. It may seem frustrating putting 50 points into a slash weapon you are using then finding a significantly better crush weapon. There are two things I would like to say about this dilemma, first, if you feel you have wasted too many skill points it is possible (for a fee) to reset your skill points at the witch. Once reset you will get back all the skill points you have earned and you may reallocate them in any way you see fit. Secondly, having a weapon skill trained allows you more variety sometimes in weapons used. For example if you have heavily invested in Slash, you may find that using a slash weapon, even though it may be a lower level then a non-slash weapon, does more damage because of the points you have invested.
These are all things to consider when spending your skill points on weapons. The best advice I can give is that after researching on your own, if you are still not sure about something just ask anyone in-game to help you. The quest community is always willing to lend a helping hand in any way possible, just speak up.
