Basically with enough points into certain categories you gain access to spells you can use outside of battle that will give you a set about of +FOC or Damage reduction for a set amount of time.  (like a protection type spells that reduces damage taken by 5% for 10 minutes and the cost of X amount of mp.)  The higher you get with the category the damage taken or stat increases could raise or the duration lengthen.

A while back I started work on a "buffs" system but abandoned it... I dont think Quest is ready. Buffs are a very group friendly feature. In the solo environment we have going now we can achieve +STAT or -DMG "buffs" on equipment or through skills. (but agreeably skills and equip are not the exact same, many "1 hit" or in-battle-only effects we can't do until buffs).

Definitely on its way, after groups.

What buffs can really give us in spades is a new role in group situations that doesnt exist right now: buffer/support role. Especially if we broke off a WISDOM stat for heal/buff efficacy but thats a whole 'nother thread, eh?
