When the zerker's cloth broke you lost those mods.  You must have had more HP+MP than your base which is why it left them full.   If you had 10/2000 HP/MP  then it would have kept you at 10/174 (whatever your base HP/MP is).

Does that make sense?

This is a good question though.  When an item breaks it should probably reduce your MP/HP by percent.  So if you have 1500/2000 HP before the zerkers cloth breaks you'll end up with 75/100 hp after it breaks.

i disagree. If your a mage and have 10000 MP, 200 base, and have used 5000 MP, that would leave you at half. Then your armor breaks, your down to 200 MP. Cutting that MP in half would destroy the mage's ability to attack.

However, things like this (what happens when <somthing> happens) should be included in the help file, or a readme, or posted on the forum somewhere. Perhaps an "explination of changes" thread on the general forum so people knows what will happen in the case their armor or weapons break. That way if somthing happens that shouldnt happen, or somthing that should happen doesnt happen, it can be noted.

This is along the same lines as the item breaking and this thread made me think of it. Was it discussed that there should be a warning on screen when your items break? I can't remember but Perin was playing the other day and his armor broke. He died in the fight right after it broke. He didn't get a warning that it had broken and without realizing it went into a fight armorless and died in one hit.

while that does make perfect sense you're forgetting that the ONLY mod zerkers gives is str. Not Hp.

EDIT: Also, it healed me for about 1500, pretty sure there's not an item in the game that gives that much.

It might be a good idea to make the item break just out of battle, it still will cause an inconveniciecne because it takes a day for the item to repair, but it doesn't cause problems and issues like this.
