When the server goes down, maybe there can be a webpage, remote script or some other system in place that a QO can reboot it when Jouser is not home. It would make it a lot easier for everyone and put less emails/txt messages/phone calls to Jouser in the long run. It would also keep the down time of the server to a minimum.

lol tina, thats why i stopped having my messenger running all the time lol. im not even a qo, but i would get lots of IMs about "is the server down? i cant get in" from random newbs with the reasoning that i was the only moderator they saw online and thought they would ask me lol.

and i dont quite understand gzus' idea , but considering i believe the computer has to be rebooted when the server goes down, i dont think anyone can restart the computer remotely, i believe u have to do it manually.

hoya999, You can remotely restart any computer or server as long as the access to do so is given and the means. I am a Network Admin and have remote access from home to reboot, install and change everything on all my servers. In my gaming group we have the ability to stop and start our server for our COD server and our JKA server, but this feature does not give you the ability to fully reboot the gaming servers as they are being used by multiple groups.

In this case with Quest, a script on the server can be activated via webpage or some other means and it would reboot the server and can even log the user name and password for the server without anyone (but Jouser) knowing what it is. Also the script or webpage would be protected by passwords etc that only QO's or QMO's would have so that not everyone would be able to disrupt service to Quest.

Another reason this is beneficial is that if there was a 2nd server for beta and testing then the upgrades can be easily uploaded to the server, the server rebooted remotely and the QO's, QMO's or beta testers can test new clients without the community being effected. But even if there would never be a beta server, these upgrades can still be made remotely and tested and if there are problems removed and the community would never know that something different has happened.

If Jouser, the QO's, QMO's want I can assist in helping with anything needed. I am not a programmer but I can help with server scripting and remote access. Also if needed I can also work on helping to get another server for beta testing, load balancing or any other needs. I am only here to help and to be a valuable member of the Quest community.

I think the problem with this machine is that it denies or dos not respond to any network traffic.
It has to be rebooted from Console
An option is a APC switch to cycle the power on and off through a webinterface in the device.
I use some of those and it works great

We need people to start donating on the paypal donation fund for a new server and we could also use the money to purchase a APC/UPS(?).  The last outage was due to a power failure and the machine didn't come back properly.  It's old crappy hardware.  I'm going to try and replace it with something new at the end of the summer using whatever donations we've raised.

MysticRat:  Yes, you are correct.  Sometimes the server gets hung in BIOS saying "Operating System Not Found."  Wake-On-Lan may be an option but I don't know if it can "restart" a machine if it's in this hung state.

WoL doesn't get a system out of a failure state.
I am such a poor bastard Smiley
I always get my stuff from work and trading lol

but if everybody donates a few bucks it will indeed be easier for Jouser
Maybe reward donators?
with a few extra sprites to choose from?
let them choose a title?
maybe even attach the amount of donation to the reward
bigger donation = bigger reward

We've already discussed this at length several times...it defeats the purpose of a free online game that was meant to always be free if we start giving people pay-only options, and especially if those pay-only options increase in value (even cosmetically so) with the amount of donation.? People work hard at playing the game to get sprites, not work hard at paying the game to get sprites....even though they're just cosmetic.  They're a sign of accomplishment.  And it's even worse if they can only be obtained through paying.  Do we really want to send the message that you can buy your way to a higher position, especially in a free game?

I'm sorry, guys. I'm all for everyone donating to the server, cause we love this community, and love this game, and Jouser foots the bill. So please..everyone donate! But I have to go with Shiris on this. I'm not for buying sprites, titles, positions, anything.  Donate because you love the game. Earn your position therin!

You won't be receiving anything for donating except possibly a personal thank you from myself.

However, if you would like to directly give me money I would be wiling to trade you game resources.  Cheesy

OK, i already sent a mule with a couple sacks of gold to your house... (i wrote it in a paper... says "Deliver at Jouser's House", so there shouldn't be any problem....). The mule should arrive in 5 or 6 years... (if it doesn't get lost... you know mules and their trips).

lyrael, i think he meant the raiders would steal the sacks of gold and just throw the mule on jouser, not the money.

i think someone would steal the money and then pretend it was their money they were donating, if it gets donated at all that is, lol.
