Ok the (f) that appears in town or when just walking around or out of no where has been found by yours truely me. Basically it happens when you examine another player or you do /motd or see the /motd when signing in. It is caused by the "Blue Box" that appears on the screen with the information in it. Hope this helps.
Edit: If possible could make an /away function where as a blue box would pop up saying "Your status is set to away" with an (A) next to your name so you can go afk with out having to use the decline option. This would also allow others to see you are away as well.

Basically when the blue box that pops up when you look at someone else's gear, or when the blue box with the MOTD in it, causes you to recieve the (f) next to your name while it is on your screen when you are night in a fight.

Yeah, I didn't think this was a bug, but...
I believe the (F) while moving is caused by lag between your computer and the other person, between when they are entering a fight and when your computer gets caught up with their movements.
